Mae, chief linguist on the Ivoire, heads a diplomatic mission to Ukhanda. Her handling of relations with the Quurzod lead to a battle that causes the Ivoire’s anacapa drive to malfunction, stranding the ship in foldspace. Mae can’t remember what she did wrong on the mission all she knows is that she’s one of the few survivors. If she doesn’t recall it, she won’t be able to prevent another disaster when the Ivoire escapes foldspace. If the Ivoire escapes foldspace. Because what no one talks about—and everyone fears—is that the Ivoire is becalmed…forever.
One of the untold stories in Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s award-winning “Diving” universe, “Becalmed” stands alone—yet answers questions long-time readers might have about the history of the Fleet.
“[‘Becalmed’] is quite fascinating and another fine tale from Rusch.”

Becalmed A Diving Universe Novella The Diving Series eBook Kristine Kathryn Rusch
I found "Becalmed" to be an engrossing, short science fiction mystery/adventure novella. It's set in the same interstellar universe as the author's "City in Ruins" and its sequels. It's set before the time of those stories, which lets it still stand on its own. In this far future space-faring universe, humanity expanded through the stars, and then for whatever reason retrenched, leaving many civilizations isolated to go their own way. This story involves the Fleet, a largely benevolent re-exploration of one human culture to re-contact its many, varied long-lost descendant cultures. This was a very compelling story right from the start. The main plot takes placeaboard a Fleet spaceship in "foldspace", though the story is about piecing together what went wrong on a planet they just left where a diplomatic peacemaking mission got 24 members of the diplomatic team killed. The linguist who survived is assumed to be to blame, but is unable to defend herself because she's suppressed the memories of her own trauma. Learning what has already happened becomes an enthralling tale I couldn't put down.
This book involves characters who appeared in "City in Ruins", the second book of Rusch's "Diving into the Wreck" series, though this story takes place well before those events, and I think it will stand up fine on its own; for fans of the "Diving" universe it's a must-read. The primary character was intriguing as she struggles with her guilt of failure and being the survivor who lost the rest of her team, afraid to confront her lost memories. Thanks to first-person narration, the author coyly manages not to give her name until the very end of the story, a trick to keep "City in Ruins" readers guessing.
Overall, a very entertaining read. (According to the flyleaf, this story previous appeared in Asimov's SF Magazine in 2011.)

Becalmed A Diving Universe Novella The Diving Series eBook Kristine Kathryn Rusch Reviews
Another great addition to the Diving universe!
Usually don't like novellas, like eating one of those little chocolate bars, giving you a taste with out satisfying hunger. However, I love KKR's writing and enjoyed this greatly. If you haven't read any of the Diving Universe series you are missing out !
It dragged through the middle of the story, but that may only have been me. The ending was ok. I liked the other books in this series that I have read. Have "Skirmishes" to go yet and look forward to when I have time.
Here it becomes clear why this is called a Diving Universe. Really a fascinating detective story as well as a cross-cultural experience. The mental torture that the heroine suffered is excruciating...
Short book in series I love, involves the Ivoire and the wife of Coop, who is a Linguist. I sometimes get a bit annoyed if I feel the author is trying to sneak in some great over opinion on the political state of our own society, but her stories are so entertaining and her characters so great, I am willing to overlook any perceived proselytizing.
This fills a hole in the City of Ruins novel. A minor character Mae was the linguistic leader on Coopers ship when they got trapped in fold space. We are told her team was killed and the ship attacked. This story tells us what happened. Nice job of examining the affects of different cultures traditions when assumptions are made.
Since I like the "Diving Universe" stories, I enjoyed this story.
One bit from this story I had never encountered, is the idea that other human cultures, would pursue the art of architecture and city/community planning completely differently than anything we see here on Earth. What I liked is how she went into their thought processes behind their reasoning. She barely touched that, but it is not something I have read much about in the manner she discussed/described it.
Half the physical book is an except from "Disappeared", which caught me off guard.
"Disappeared" is an awesome story by itself... I just wasn't ready for half these pages to be from it as an advertisement for it.
