For decades feminists have belabored the idea that work should be at the center of women’s lives, and that motherhood wouldn’t get in the way of this goal if society would simply cooperate. If husbands performed half the housework and childcare, if the government would invest in universal daycare and family leave, and if employers allowed parents to leave the office at 500 p.m., women could achieve the balance they so desperately seek. But the real reasons work-family balance remains elusive are much more complex.

In The Two-Income Trap, bestselling author and Fox News contributor Suzanne Venker claims the two-income family is a trap. It encourages Americans to think about family solely in terms of economics, when in fact breadwinning is only part of the equation. The burnout that results from not having someone home to do everything mothers have historically done is huge.

Not only do children lose out, marriages become stressed to the breaking point. Husbands and wives become locked in a battle over who’s going to do what on the home front. When that happens, many women view this as a marital problem when in fact the issue is time. There just isn’t enough. “The battles [between husbands and wives] aren’t always waged over actual chores or the inequity of handling them. The battle is over time,” writes Rhonda Nordin in After the Baby.

At the core of this debate, writes Venker, is the fact that raising a family is no longer valued or even recognized as an enormous undertaking. The needs of children simply don’t allow both parents the freedom to dedicate themselves fully to something else.

Fortunately, Americans are finally accepting this fact. Not only are more fathers staying home, the share of stay-at-home mothers rose to 29% in 2012, up from a modern-era low of 23% in 1999. This rise represents a reversal of the long-term decline in this group that had persisted for the last three decades of the 20th century—during which time feminists waved the flag of liberation.

But none of it feels liberating. Women are tired of trying to keep up with the demands of full-time work and childrearing. They’re tired of trying to prove themselves. The idea that women can ‘have it all’—pursue demanding careers, raise fabulous kids and remain perfectly sane along the way—is bogus. There are only so many hours in a day.

The secret to balance, for those who want it, is to accept that a woman’s life has seasons a time for this and a time for that. Women who insist on doing everything at once are proving nothing except an allegiance to a dying movement. The era of “I am woman, hear me roar” is over.

Women can have most of what they want over the course of their lives, but not if they follow the cultural script feminists have laid out for them. Women need to adjust their expectations and accept that when we choose to have children, we choose a life of trade-offs. So do men.

We also need to broaden our view of what it means to be successful. Being important in the outside world is great, but it will never compare to the significance of our presence at home, and to the calming nature of that home when someone’s physically there. At the end of the day, it’s our personal success, not our professional success, that determines how happy we are.

“Dr. Laura” praises The Two-Income Trap “Ms. Venker’s contribution to humanity, to families, to marriages, to women is huge. In a way, it is sad that she’s got to argue points to prove what ought to be a “given.” On the other hand, her arguments are beautifully crafted and right on target for today’s anti-childrearing atmosphere. My hope for you, the reader, is that after you read this book, you will be unwavering in your commitment to do the right thing, and reap the incredible rewards.”

The TwoIncome Trap Why Parents Are Choosing To Stay Home eBook Suzanne Venker

I'm a pastor's wife and mom (we have five kids) who works from home very part time. I loved this book, and believe that women from all walks of life will benefit from reading what Suzanne Venker has to say.

I found this book challenging at many levels. Mrs. Venker takes no sides: everyone- working moms, at-home moms, and everyone in between- will probably get their feathers ruffled at some point by this book!

A thought-provoking and honest read.

Suzanne has a penchant for honest, objective assessments of these sensitive topics. Even if you generally (or even specifically) disagree with her, I think you would find yourself nodding your head if you just listen to/read the arguments for what they are. Suzanne successfully bridges that gap between the modern American family and what is best for that same family overall, in the long run. Read with an open mind and be willing to admit that at least a few of her points resonate with you...and you'll be on your way to a more balanced life. And isn't what we all want in the end?
Suzanne delves into the myth that we have in society that two incomes are necessary to survive. It's not about survival, it's about greediness and wealth-envy, that requires sacrificing children at the altar of money. If kids could be bought, wealthy families would really have it all, but with the endless stories of the failures of wealthy kids to become productive citizens, you'd think we'd get a clue. Stop chasing that brass ring and pursue your kids and family life instead. The two-income myth is a trap, indeed. Great book!
I have already decided to give up my job and stay home. I was hoping this book would provide some suggestions about how to survive on one income. Not what I was hoping for.
Do not read this garbage. All it is is some crazy lady from Fox News covertly trying to brainwash women into believing that their true place is within the home and outside of the workplace. Her rhetoric is just old wine in new bottles. Her blatant admonishment of The Women's Movement/Feminism and all of the gains that women have made since the mid-twentieth century should be your first clue as to why this book is actually BAD for women rather than good or helpful. Venker, and all of her colleagues, are simply blaming women and feminism for gender inequality in the workplace and in the home instead of the institutional and cultural constraints that have been put on women for centuries. Moral of the story women's gains in society are perceived to be at the expense of men, rather than simply catching up to men. Masculinity may be in a "crisis", - not because women are marrying later/divorcing their husbands or because women have now surpassed men in society (which they haven't) - but because of men's PERCEIVED loss of power over women's lives.
I'm a stay home mom. Been one for over 8 years and going strong.
The beginning of this book preface why the author wrote the book, but also seems too apologetic as
to not offend other moms.
I have read Elizabeth Warren and Dr. Laura on stay home mom and two income trap. They were always straightforward, unapologetic about the truth. And that's what I like. We live in a society that needs to hear the truth from leaders and great writers, and be unapologetic about it.
Although I know this book will be controversial and covers an array of extremely sensitive issues, I happen to agree whole heartedly with the author, and I think many mothers (and fathers) in similar situations as mine will too. It was so refreshing to know that I am not alone because I definitely feel like the minority these days. As a former daycare worker and preschool teacher, and as a "work at home" mom and a woman with many friends who are "full time working moms", I can attest that his author knows exactly what she's talking about.
Excellent book. I have raised 13 children and was a stay at home mom. Everything she says in this book I can 100% relate too. Woman need to hear the truth, and so does society!
